I love your weird world! I’m not of the mindset that all comics must be destined to become movies, but man… I could imagine if Henson got a hold of this! Fortunately for me, your skill with cartooning and storytelling allows me to visit this world holographically in my imagination each time I read a new episode – so who needs a movie?!? Keep em comin!
Poor girl, she’s finally in the arms of a Knight in Dirty Armor, and she’s still not letting her defenses down. No crying her eyes out. No asking for mommy. No nothing.
I had the same thought. There are some slight differences in the helmut, but this could be chalked up to the evolution of Eldon’s style. The fellow seems to have the same wryly well-inclined attitude towards Emily (cf his soto voce compliment to Ramon about being a ‘charitable soul’ when he catches sight of Emily through the transom).
My goodness, I think you are right!
As Jeff said, it looks a little different, but this seems mostly due to the artist’s skill advancing. As far as I’m concerned, the appearance is just about identical.
Nice Catch!
I’m trying to work out what significance there could be to the primary liquid not being a solvent… The main thing it takes me back to is page 126 where they mention that New England is beyond the cloud flats and that attempting the trek in the rainy season would be very dangerous. The Soumie is toxic to humans (maybe not lethally) but if its everywhere, I can’t imagine that’d be a good thing. Its also sticky and tastes like maple syrup but can harden up enough to require pick-axes to tear it appart but is so lite that it floats in the air.
We’re not even sure if this place is a planet in the true sense. No sun and night just comes and goes. Who knows whats producing light. But I guess there is a North… Unless his comment about “sorta North” is an indicator that its not quite the case.
Umway did mention that this place was in the Avalonian’s territory, but then it begs the question of how “territory” is distinguished. Does this place exist in the known universe? are alternate dimensions claimed, dreams or is time it’s self somehow devided into territories. There weren’t even any stars in the night sky, yet there must be an atmosphere with oxygen that is generating the blue sky affect with assistance from some light source… Maybe there are giant Shrooms, or fields of shrooms that keep getting drenched with the glow chemicals and then running out of the liquid for darkness to set.
Water is a solvent, usually referred to as the Universal Solvent. It’s what allows for life to spread so quickly. Minerals can dissolve into water, creating a nutrient enriched soup. A non-soluble liquid being the main source of liquid for this place, would mean that life had non-aquatic origins, due to the fact that there would be no mix of minerals and nutrients that you would get in a soluble liquid. Especially considering the other properties of Soumie.
As for this being a planet, I highly doubt that. None of the facts stack up right for it to be a planet. I doubt it’s a universe either. What it probably has a chance of being is a “Pocket Dimension.” Artificially created to run on arbitrary rules of physics that make little to no sense and sealed off from the rest of the multiverse at large. You’ll notice that only dimensional travelers and the hapless strays seem to be able to get into the place. Everyone else that calls the place home, was probably created there too.
I was more wondering what the primary liquid not being solvent might mean for it’s properties in the world with rain etc… but… wait a second… we need water but water is toxic to them… like it is to metal which rusts… and they need a non-solvent… like oil to oil up an engine.
*googles the taste of motor oil*
Damn! its a sweet taste, it’s sticky and probably a lot like the maple syrup taste that Emilly noted!!!
Could they actually be complex machines?! Or maybe some metalic based life-form?
So the Avalons don’t care about them because they’re machines? Or they could transform them into objects not with mere psychic powers but with commands that the robotic life-forms understood to transform into the devices? Like they’re all made from millions of nano-bots?
Might even explain the acid burn if we presume the nano-bots sense the intentions of the creature and respond by dispersing when they come in contact with human fluids, presuming that the creature is attacking them. Ties in nicely with what we saw Umway doing when he created, and modified, robotic equipment out of thin air. Still some kind of telepathic ability in use by Umway and maybe the Avalonians though.
That is an interesting theory. It would explain quite a few things. All though the inhabitants, they claim that the “Strays” aren’t what they think of as “Humans”. Due to the strays not having godlike powers. (In this case, command over the complex nano-tech of the dimension?)
But with a bit of extrapolating, that can be solved too. From what I’ve seen, what the Strays might be, is not astray only in space and dimension, but in Time as well.
The references at the very begining with the odd couple in the car, the “Pre-Telepathy” comment that the Space Orca makes, the burgeoning science of nano-tech in the world of today. It’s sketchy, but it could be possible.
And these “Humans” are people who can make an entire dimension to suit their whims, at that kind of technological level, there is probably not much that they can’t do.
I’m not exactly sure where the Avalonians fit in. Perhaps they are a faction of the humans who choose to maintain a strict but non-invasive control of the area, maybe? They keep people from making obvious displays of technology from what I’ve noticed, but other than that, they don’t seem to care.
To explain Emily’s abilities, we’d have to presume that when a human enters the world, nano-bots in the air and area are breathed in or absorbed and work to heighten the person’s natural abilities (speed, strength, etc).
Yeah, time is involved. “Chronologically displaced” gave that away. And the Rhino creature was a “Fate Weaver” so it all suggests time is involved. Umway also noted various telepathy institutions that didn’t yet exist in Emily’s time.
I forget exactly what happened in the temporary special comic that Eldon ran of Xuan and the other bloke. But she certainly seemed to have AT LEAST some telepathy powers, and presuming she wasn’t simply using nano-bots to do the last thing I remember in that comic, then some Telekenesis as well.
Again, it all suggests that some future from Emily’s time has significant psychic power and technology, together with the ability to traverse time.
…Imagine this. If do something insignificant then you adjust a timeline and all branches formed in and after that timeline, but do something significant enough in the past, then you don’t simply change the timeline but create a new one. But creating a new timeline isn’t as simple as a flutter of a butterfly’s wings. It actually takes some significant work to create a new timeline. Now imagine that there are various different timeline branches, or dimensions, caused by these adjustments. Go a bit further and imagine that these different branches of time are considered territories, so you can do as you please in a timeline that you own, but adjust someone else’s and they won’t appreciate it. You might wipe out rival civilisations in your timeline, but as long as you don’t wipe them out in the timelines that those civilisations own, they may not care much. But if you go too far back (like back to Emily’s timeline, then you may have gone back to a point before your timeline was created and begin to have some minor affects not only on your own but other’s, which would likely leave them very unhappy.
Oh, whew. So this place ISN’T another universe, just a ‘planet’.
I can relax now. You have no idea how much this comic has been putting my brain through the wringer trying to figure out a universe that could run this setup, along with all the unfortunate logical implications thereof.
God, the result would have been horrifying.
Eloquent, intelligent, so far being rather kind and altruistic. Also, some sort of astronaut/dimension traveller, as he’s not from there. Travelling scientist of some sort maybe? Possibly a robot. At the very least, vaguely humanoid.
And everyone likes him. That’s always a bonus. (He is definitely interesting.)
The comment “I fixed a bunch of other stuff while I was at it” probably refers to her cracked rib and bite marks… But I wonder if it also means her sight is now fixed, so she doesn’t need glasses.
Also love how she really did die and she was lucky someone could resurrect/repair her as opposed to a lucky survival of the fall.
Not sure what to make of this new information. It sounds like something has designed the place and makes it work by will, but is it the avalonians or are they just benefiting from an existing problem thats caused this knot? For that matter, I wonder how he got there and if he can get out and take Emily with him.
Man, i love that robot-guy already. He seems like a really nice guy, but one who may perfectly change his attitude completely once more information reveals itself. As always, love the art.
Great drawings and a great story. Found it a couple of days ago and have plowed through the storyline with immense pleasure.
Keep up the fantastic work!
Wow, I love the inks and colors. The palette is very striking in its subtlety. Way cool look.
I LOVE this page! (and for some reason i hear “fairytale of newyork” by the pogues while reading this comic).

Privileged, Eldon. Not Privilaged.
As Sean said. Great story. I’ve recommended you on a number of sites.
Thanks for the heads up. All fixed up.
Poor girl, she’s finally in the arms of a Knight in Dirty Armor, and she’s still not letting her defenses down. No crying her eyes out. No asking for mommy. No nothing.
Has she become that hard already ?
btw …. is he the same guy as the guy in strip #131 ?

i want a 1/6 scale of this guy! HE’s a bad ass!
The world is kept working by the Mighty Will of the Great God Eldon, of course.
I like this guy.
